Rhetrologics
Retrologics applied to rhetoric and poetics proceeds from the Kantian doctrine that a priori intuition is grounded knowledge whereby humans construct space and time as cognitions. In this respect, mathematics and metaphysics have in common their grounding in a priori principles based on intuition where method is synthetic construction. What is common to metaphysics, cognitive poetics and rhetoric is the construction of concepts as figures of thought (trope). Since all concepts are abstractions from experience, all thought as the subsumption of experience under a concept by way of judgement, is based on analogy, and figurative. In logic, figures are evident in classical syllogisms and inference, in poetry as figures of speech, and in rhetoric as figures of thought. In applied mathematics, they are the physical sciences as constructed synthetic concepts: representations. Cognitive poetics resides within the metaphysical enterprise as figures of thought and play a similar role in metaphysics and science as thought experiments. In this respect, cognitive poems are multidimensional, affective, abstract artifacts. They are poems of the heart and mind.
Applied to classical rhetorics, ethos, pathos and logos, retrologics explores the extent to which machine learning and artificial intelligence can construct rhetorical cognitions as figures of thought. If so, as evidenced in contemporary democracies, how machines can and will function as effective agents of persuasion.
'In whatever way and whatever means a cognition may relate to objects, that through which it relates immediately to them, and at which all thought as a means is directed as an end, is intuition'. (Kant CPR A19 | B33)
